Using Rugged Devices Outdoors? Here’s What You Need to Know About Screen Brightness

Can I use these screens outdoors? How bright are they?

Rugged laptops and tablets are designed for tough environments, including bright, sunlit conditions. One of the major differences between rugged and consumer-grade laptops is screen brightness, and this matters for field work.

What Are Nits?

Screen brightness is measured in nits (cd/m²). It refers to how much visible light the display emits. The higher the nit rating, the more readable the screen is in well-lit or outdoor conditions.

  • Standard laptops: ~200–300 nits — difficult to see outdoors
  • Semi-rugged laptops: ~400–700 nits — brighter and usable in shaded or semi-outdoor settings
  • Fully rugged & extreme laptops: ~800–1400+ nits — designed for sunlight readability

Quick reference for common models:

Semi-Rugged: Panasonic FZ-55, Getac S410, Dell Latitude 5420, 5430 & 5424 Rugged (typically 400–700 nits)

Fully Rugged: Panasonic CF-33, Panasonic FZ-40, Panasonic FZ-G1, Getac F110, Getac B300, Dell Latitude 7424 & 7330 Rugged Extreme (typically 800–1400+ nits)

Choose a semi-rugged device if your work is mostly in the shade, inside vehicles, or on covered job sites. You’ll get better portability and a brighter-than-average screen.

Choose a fully rugged or extreme if you work in harsh sunlight, exposed outdoor environments, or need the highest visibility and durability.
