More RAM gives your rugged laptop the capacity to handle demanding tasks without slowing down. Whether you’re running field diagnostics, mapping with GIS software, juggling multiple browser tabs, or operating heavy industrial programs, extra memory ensures smooth multitasking and fewer slowdowns.

For basic use, 8GB is sufficient. If you’re dealing with large files, multitasking, or specialised software, upgrading to 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB will make a noticeable difference in speed and responsiveness.

Storage (SSD)

Storage determines how much data your device holds — operating system, software, files, and project data. All refurbished units come with SSDs (solid-state drives) for fast, reliable performance in the field.

A 256GB SSD handles general use, such as web access, document storage, light software, and email. For larger files, a 512GB or 1TB SSD is a better fit.

You might need more storage if you:

• Store and playback training or job site videos
• Run virtual machines for specialised environments (e.g. Windows 7 inside Windows 10)
• Save large numbers of high-resolution service manuals and schematics

4G Internet (+ GPS)

All devices come with built-in Wi-Fi, so you can connect to a mobile hotspot if needed. However, a dedicated 4G mobile broadband card built into the device offers added convenience and improves workflow in the field.

With 4G built-in, you don’t need to tether to your phone or search for a hotspot; just open the lid and you’re online. Whether you’re updating job notes, sending off a report, accessing cloud-based diagnostics, or emailing a quote, an always-on connection saves time.

While signal strength depends on location and carrier, rugged devices often have better antennas and placement than a typical mobile phone, which may lead to stronger or more stable reception depending on the environment.

If you work on the road, in remote areas, or prefer not to rely on your phone for internet, built-in 4G keeps you productive and connected.

Dedicated GPS

Some refurbished devices can be configured with dedicated GPS hardware, designed specifically for accurate, real-time location tracking.

Unlike 4G modules that include GPS as a secondary feature, a dedicated GPS module is purpose-built for navigation, mapping, and location-based applications. It offers faster lock times, improved accuracy, and better stability in tough environments.

This is especially useful for:

• Field technicians tracking asset locations
• Marine or off-road navigation
• Mapping, surveying, and GIS software
• Integration with drone, RF, or telemetry systems
• Offline work where you can’t rely on network-assisted GPS

Extended Warranty

All refurbished devices come with a standard 6-month warranty covering hardware faults and defects, including batteries and chargers. Optional extended warranties of 1 or 2 years are available when configuring your product.

Extended coverage is beneficial for devices used daily or in demanding environments. It ensures that if any hardware issues arise beyond the initial 6 months, you’re covered without unexpected repair costs.

Secondary Battery (Optional Spare)

Some rugged laptops support dual batteries, allowing you to hot-swap one while the other continues to power the system. This is ideal for long shifts in the field where charging opportunities are limited.

For other models, we can supply a secondary battery that can be manually swapped when the main one is depleted. This isn’t available for every device, but for supported models it extends runtime without needing to plug in.

Most rugged laptops use cartridge-style batteries, and the battery setup varies between models. If you’re unsure whether your device supports dual batteries or if spares are available, contact us and we’ll check compatibility.

Operating System

Every refurbished rugged laptop comes with a clean, pre-installed Windows operating system, tailored to your needs. As part of your build, you choose the version that suits your workflow, software requirements, or compatibility needs.

We offer:

• Windows 11 Pro – the modern choice for most users, with support for the latest features and security updates
• Windows 10 Pro – for users who prefer a familiar environment or need compatibility with specific software setups
• Windows 7 – available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions for legacy systems and older diagnostic tools
• In some cases, we can also install Windows XP for specialised industrial applications

Vehicle Charger

Need to stay powered while on the move? A vehicle charger is a practical upgrade — perfect for anyone working on the road or between job sites.

Our rugged laptops and tablets can be paired with dedicated DC chargers, designed to run directly from your vehicle’s power system. Most options use a standard cigarette lighter plug, but some support bare wire connections for hard-wired installation. If you need a wired-in setup, contact us to check availability for your model.

There are typically two charger types:

• 12–16V DC chargers — suited to regular cars, utes, and light vehicles
• 12–32V DC wide-input chargers — suitable for higher-voltage systems like trucks, buses, or machinery with 24V supplies

Choosing the right charger matters, especially in vehicles with non-standard voltage ranges.

If you spend the day driving between customers, job sites, or out in the paddock, having your laptop or tablet charging as you go means you won’t be scrambling for power mid-shift.

Dedicated Graphics

Some rugged laptops offer dedicated graphics — a separate Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) designed to handle intensive visual or graphical tasks. This is different from integrated graphics, which share memory with the CPU and are sufficient for general use.

Dedicated GPUs are useful for:

• 3D modelling or CAD software
• GIS and mapping applications with heavy rendering
• Video editing or processing large image files
• Running software that specifically requires GPU acceleration

Most users don’t need dedicated graphics. For diagnostics, general business use, or field service tools, integrated graphics are more than capable.

Keyboard Options

Many rugged laptops come with multiple keyboard configurations, depending on the model and level of ruggedness. In most cases, the keyboard is built-in, but some devices support removable or upgradeable keyboards, allowing us to swap in a different style if required.

There are three main keyboard types:

• Standard Keyboard – A typical non-backlit keyboard, suitable for general use.
• Backlit Keyboard – Ideal for working in low-light environments. Backlighting improves visibility without needing an external light source.
• Rubber Sealed Keyboard – Designed for wet, dirty, or dusty environments. These are spill-resistant and easier to clean, making them ideal for mechanics, marine use, outdoor worksites, or anywhere liquid or grime exposure is common. They are often less ergonomic to type on.

Rubber and backlit keyboards are more common in fully rugged or extreme-grade laptops, while semi-rugged models may only offer standard or backlit options.
